Domaine Thomas & Fils 2006 Sancerre La Crele

Writing this from smack in the middle of a delicious bowl of linguine and clams. The clams are local, Puget Sound, alive this morning in a tank at Pike Place market, steamed open in good local butter, cream, lemon, garlic, and a healthy dose of this Sauv Blanc. This Sancerre is outrageously just-right in that way that Loire Sauv Blancs can be. Everything that the Kiwis make monstrous in their Sauv Blancs is made sublime in a good Sancerre. The grassiness, the under-ripe stone fruit, that hint of blue cheese. The whole package says Spring is here, come take a bite out of it, you lucky SOB... The wine and the clams reach a fine covenant - when a clam is gummy the wine washes away the bad taste, leaving only the pure flavor of the Puget Sound. This wine tastes like grass, lemon, unripe peach, and blue cheese, all blended in a perfect Old World harmony. Reminds me of a ridiculously splurgey bottle I had with at Herbsaint in New Orleans in 2006. Simply one of the best Sauv Blancs I've ever had.
