Gál Tibor Syrah 2003
(over 2 years ago) buddy icon marci 95/100
Last year, we had our annual tasting festival in the Castle (Budapest, Hungary). Here we have all the top cellars, coming up with their best bottles. We happened to have a "red" day, so we started tasting all our favourites and the interesting newcomers, region by region. This was THE wine, that day. We tried Hungary's top of the pop, but this one outgunned everything. Unfortunately only 400 bottles were produced, since this Syrah was actually made for a Syrah-Merlot blend, since it was a virgin vintage. The winemaker Tibor Gál (he was a pioneer among hungarian wine pros, his enthusiasm gave a lot of momentum to the hungarian wine market, sadly he left us to tend to God's vineyards in February,2005...we keep him in our dearest memories) tried all his Syrah barells, and he found one of extraordinary quality. This particular bottle has given me my most memorable offensive of different somehow harmonic taste patterns. It was love at first sight, the color was a silky, shiny, deep reddish-purplish, myterious, seductive. When I first met with the spicy fragrance i was astonished, after that I had no time to recover, the red and blueberry army ruined my nose. The first sip offered a big punch, the tannins were perfectlv balanced but unforgiving - no more tasting after ME! it filled my entire mouth in an instant, my brain was not able to keep up with its richness, so I just enJOYed the wine...
