2006 Altos Las Hormigas Malbec
(about 1 year ago)A light bodied dissapointment, i have heard many good things about Las Hormigas Malbecs, but this vintage is watered down and light. Theres too many good Malbecs out there to waste your time with this one. It starts off great, with nice odors and a nice complexity and balance in the palate, but drink it fast, in 30 minutes you will end up with what i basically call, "pizza wine". I will try other vintages, maybe this was just a bad year for them.

(about 1 year ago)I was already a fan of the 2003 Altos Malbec, and switched to the 2006 because my wine shop switched. It is still a little tight, and I find that it needs a long decanting before it mellows. It is a rich, bold wine with a great nose. It is spicy with hints of pepper, dirt and blackberries. I liked it, but it needs a little more age on it.

(about 1 year ago)The nose carries black raspberry and currant notes, but has kind of a sharp, alcoholic bite to it. First taste is herb-y and earthy ... I think I taste some basil. Lots of alcohol here, too. Bitter oak and strong tannins at the finish, which doesn't last too terribly long. There's not a lot of complexity here, which isn't a huge surprise for ten bucks. I think it could probably use some cellaring, and some decanting. Not a bad wine, kind of boring. I like my wines to leave me excited about the next sip, and this unfortunately doesn't qualify.

(10 months ago)This wine had a great scent that could be picked up well before sticking you nose in the glass. Currant, grape jelly and spice were the overwhelming scents but stick your nose in there farther and you will pick up a strong black cherry. It has a respectable taste of with a spicy overtone. Underneath there is a hint of unripeness that lets me know this wine will evolve. A good introduction to Malbec if you never had the chance.

(10 months ago)Slightly better than a good table wine. It had a nice aroma, but a slightly acidic taste with a good dry finish.

(9 months ago)Judging by aroma I thought I'd like it, however, when I tasted it...Oak and unfortunately not much else
2006 Altos Las Hormigas Malbec
(8 months ago)I pretty much agree with other tasters. This wine promises much, but doesn't deliver in the end. The nose is not bad, with blackberries and cherries, strong black pepper, and a hint of oak, but very alcoholic. Mouth feel is light. On the palate, it's dry and spicy. Faint acidic fruit, mushrooms and oak. The finish is incredibly short, hot and a little bitter. The wine just disappears in a haze of alcohol.

(7 months ago)I guess I am the curve buster here, but this could be my everyday wine ... Plum cherry round smooth ... I didn't get the alcohol and acidity complaints that others said.

(28 days ago)Best if left the bottle open an hour before pouring. Nice cherry, plum, green pepper notes on the nose. Solid entry in the fore-palate, with almost no transition to mid-palate, showing medium body, some green, half ripe tannins, and spicy after taste with additional tobacco, and cedar box notes. Nothing too exciting. Ok wine to drink by itself, but probably enhanced if accompanied by meats.
