winelibrary.com: 91 Points - Wine Spectator "Intense aromas of black olive, berry and licorice. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Big and juicy. Very well done. Better than from barrel. Best after 2009. 1,665 cases made. - JS" "A possible sleeper of the vintage, this 2003 offers up a lovely sweet toffee, black cherry, and currant-scented perfume as well as a surprisingly dense, ripe, medium-bodied Pomerol with excellent texture, and a long finish. It should provide plenty of pleasure during its first 10-12 years of life. Bravo!" -87-90 Points - Robert Parker -The Wine Advocate ... WLTV REVIEW: COLOR-fantastic; NOSE-classic Bordeaux nose: soiled, rich, candied cherry flavor, like old barn on fire, flowers; TASTE-just delicious, great richness, tons of complexity, massive tannins, but blackberry candy all the way through the finish, firm grip to last 15-25 years, hints of tar & dark, dark chocolate on the finish;

2003 Chateau Montviel, Pomerol
(over 2 years ago)Spectacular complexity in this wine. I drank this over a 5 hour span, and it was decanted during that time. Initial nose has fresh cherry and blackberry notes with just a hint of licorice-like sugar along with some "soily" aspects. After about 1.5 hours decanting, the nose had transformed, less of the fruit and licorice-like sweetness, and more of a wood and smoke, meaty, light pickle-juice type nose. Additional notes of rubber and rosemary are apparent. On the palate, there is abundant acidity and ripe tannins. This is classic old world with a very consistent soil/earth from mid-palate to long finish. After another couple of hours, the nose added a bit of blackberry jam along with dark chocolate notes, still earthy on the palate. This is a good wine, classic old world, definitely still young... it should round out nicely with more cellaring, but, tasting today, it is an 89-90. ... + or - evals...
