3 Rings Barossa Valley 2005 Shiraz
(about 1 year ago)Bacon Town. Throat-punching, bacon-eating, jam slamming SOVAY. This wine doesn't make sense. Well marketed, well positioned, bacon-based wine that touches the heart with familiar spice and common fruits; blackberry, cherry and plums mashed in a giant oak box with rich almond almond milk essence; or maybe it's just fucking good... Drink this, and the buy more; it's important...

(about 1 year ago)Agreed with the "throat punching" review—it's way, way far back on the palate. The spices are less pepper, maybe tobacco? Either way, a repeat purchase. Costco in SF currently (early 2007) carries it for much less.

(about 1 year ago)Strong nose, throwing out cherries, chocolate, with a hint of landfill...mmm landfill. The wine is a very dark purple which is a warning of what's to come. The palette is overpowering at first, kind of like your first pull of a cigar. So yes, a blend of some tobacco, bacon, licorice, cherry, spice, and alcohol dominate the palette. For such a powerful wine upfront I was a little disappointed in the finish. We tried this at a Barossa Valley Shiraz wine tasting (it came in second) and there was an obvious love hate thing going on depending on whether you enjoyed the tobacco, spice, and alchohol or can’t stand it. Predictably the love/hate directly correlated with gender, guys loved it, and women…not so much. So…I would recommend it for those who like an occasional assault on the palette…or punch in the throat (as previously described) and would not recommend it for those who like to keep their palette and throat intact.

(about 1 year ago)This wine, with some air time in the bottle, was too out of balance and there are many cheaper Australian fruit bombs that can deliver higher values. On the nose: oak sugarcane, alc, raspberry; on the palate: long finish with raisins and sour candy... + or - evals... Distinct varietal character: +, Integration: -, Expressiveness: -, Complexity: -, Connectedness: +

(about 1 year ago)On the nose this wine had a sour, alcoholic smell to it that covered any other scents. The taste was a bit hot, but had an unexpected sour apple/citrus finish. Overall any complexity of this wine was hidden by the strong sour/citrus finish.
