My first serious wine tasting, presented on the second lecture of H ADM 430: Introduction to Wines at Cornell. The smell of this wine contained both high acidity, with strong grapefruit and hints of pineapple, as well as a strong smoky aroma with hint of vanilla. The flavor had a warm attack, almost a burn, some fruit and acidity, very strong in acidity actually, a bit of buttery or creamy feeling, and left a strong smoky taste of wood behind. I wasn't impressed with this wine, though I did find the taste interesting and I could sense the effect of the toasted head on the smell and the flavor. Maybe I could enjoy this with the right food, and with that expectation I gave it a 3, though from first impression it seemed more like a 2.5.

Aroma of pear, oak, and sour apple. Buttery and apple flavor. Refreshing

Nose: rotting geranium petals and hoisin sauce. Yeah, I winced. On the palate I could identify rancid butterscotch mashed with those same geraniums. I suppose the butter mouthfeel is nice. Towards the end of the midpalate and into the finish I get some oak, but it is overpowered by flabby sweetness. The finish lasts longer than I would expect, but since the lingering aftertaste is nothing I enjoy, I'd rather it dissapeared more quickly. Honestly, this is something I would never drink again. I did cook with it and it worked fine in a stirfry chicken dish with plum sauce.

It's a cooking wine. The nose is soapy, sharp; the taste is about the same mixed with flowers, butter, some citrus fruits. Not recommended.

Nose of buttered popcorn...very buttery and oaky flavor. This wine went really well with some chicken with pasta with a rich alfredo-like sauce. If you aren't into oak and butter, stay away. I wouldn't drink this very often, but I think as a buttery oakmonster (ROARrrrrrr) it is a tasty example. I would get this again every once in a while with the right foods.
