Gravity Hills 2004 Tumbling Tractor Zinfandel
(about 1 year ago)This is not what I was expecting from a cali zin with a flying tractor on the label. Tight nose and subtle flavors (for a zin.) I bought it on GV's recommendation, but upon review that was with food. I had it on it's own and found it a little dry, I was looking forward to a fruit bomb. Going to let this one sit. Second bottle: much more enjoyable. Must have been in a critical mood first time around. Score updated.

(about 1 year ago)Out of 6 bottles single blind, this bottle won for me - that was the first time I had this bottle, nicely round, subtle sweetness, not over-the-top zin character, yet still maintaining it's varietal character... the second time around, this bottle seemed a bit flabbier, I would not buy this again. + or - evals... Distinct varietal character: +, Integration: +, Expressiveness: -, Complexity: -, Connectedness: +

(about 1 year ago)This wine has taught me more about the aeration of wine than almost any other. In my experience, it's drinkable, but tight, straight out of the bottle. But soon after being opened the mid-palate becomes cloudy, and for HOURS the tannins seem to multiply, throwing a haze over the wonderment beneath. However, after this youngster's been open for about a day and a half, it's pure magic. I'm not normally a huge fan of the fruit bombs, but this one's pretty damn good. Even the buttered-popcorn (which I often find nauseating elsewhere) is done well here. I'd probably rate this juice a little bit higher if it weren't for the tiresome decanting it requires when young. This might just blow my mind in a couple of years.

(about 1 year ago)Color was ruby, but you could see through it. Some fruit and spice on the nose. Taste: red fruit to be named later, spice, and chocolate. This is more subtle than the Winner's Tank, which by comparison, provides a full-on assault on the palate. Comparing Shiraz and Zin probably isn't fair, but those are the two varietals I've been drinking this week. Can't help but compare. 88-89 points. Nice wine.

(about 1 year ago)I find this wine to ber a steal for the money. It has a very jammy consistency with raspberry and a little blueberry. Finishes with a beautiful dark chocolate flavor. I findit very complex. Over the course of drinking the flavors really seem to explode to me.

(about 1 year ago)Bouquet: WHAM! Rasberries, Blackberries, dark chocolate undertones, hints of blueberries. Fruit-O-RAMA! Flavor Profile: By far my favorite everyday Zin, I could drink this till I turn purple (HA!) Nice fruit integration, touches of Grape nerds this walks a nice line between New and Old World. Just a delicious wine. Alcohol well integrated with the fruit. This is by far one of my favorite Zins and basically a go to anytime, anyplace.

(10 months ago)Absolutely blew me away. Has some of the brightest red berry flavor you can find at this price. Feels like you actually bit into a plump cherry. Wonderful mix of spices and black pepper. Overall one hell of a deal!

(8 months ago)This wine was fantastic, especially in this price range. We let it breathe for about 2 hours before we drank it, and it was totally smooth. The tannins were still there but very soft. The wine had a lot of complexity to it but all of the components were very straightforward, which I appreciated. Really nice raspberry, cherry, blackberry, some vanilla and chocolate smoothness on the mid-palate, and it finishes with a little kick of tartness that is surprising and helps all of the flavors in the wine linger. I'd buy this again and again.

(6 months ago)I bought this on the recommendation of my local wine seller and didn't realize the glut of good reviews here. I have to concur with the majority on this one. Great value. This zin has great balance between spice and fruit and is totally drinkable.
