(about 1 year ago)I give it a solid 4/5 Very good, despite being a screw top. Nice roundness.

(about 1 year ago)The group thought this wine was well-rounded with no rough edges. Also, it was clean and smooth, with spicy characteristics like peppercorn. The wine also flaunted light berry flavors.

(about 1 year ago)Very big nose and relatively big flavor profile. Odors of bing cherry, eucalyptus, and basil. Good fruit and spice flavors. Nice tannins although the finish was short. Well balanced. A good effort and great value. Probably deserves a higher score compared to some other Rhone blends I have scored, but I like the more subdued Rhones more than the explosive ones.

(about 1 year ago)Peppery. A nice choice for the price tag.

(about 1 year ago)Never has such a stinky wine won me over so completely in the end. Grenache seems to lend a certain dirty, old world smell to even new world fruit bombs - and the nose on this puppy is big, bad, and pure aged bacon. "Gamey" not in the sense of smelling like game meat, but just plain GAMEY, as in "malodorous." This is one of those noses that will delight some and terrify others - I would have run for the hills if the flavors and finish didn't lure me in, and if this wine didn't pair with food like gang-busters.
GSM wines are a funny Aussie institution - Grenache earth tones with typical down-under fruit explosion. It's a bit unsettling! Serious earthiness on the palate accompanies some very dark fruit flavors. The finish sticks around and becomes a bit bitter, but not unpleasantly so.
I tried pairing this with a red sauce (okay, okay, so I paired it with Meatball and Mozzarella Hot Pockets), but the Stump Jump really overwhelmed the meal. I had better luck, believe it or not, with Salsa! The spicy kick really subdued the funkier overtones and brought out the clean fruit in the wine. Forget what they say about pairing wines with local quisine - shoot for the equator on this one. ;)
A little on the racier side for my palate, but this was clearly an exciting, intense product from the inimitable d'Arenberg.

(about 1 year ago)Spectacular for the price. New world fruit and old world funky earth. This will definitely go into the rotation of regular purchases. On the nose I got dark cherry, barnyard earthy funk, and a black licorice chaser all wrapped in a fairly pronounced eucalyptus leaf (this really came out on the second bottle). Big fruit, medium tannins, black peppercorn and a bit of mocha on the palate. This is a wine with TONS of personality. One of my favorites this year, and for the price an absolute steal. It was a bit "zingy" even after an hour of decanting. The full personality of this wine didn't really show up until it had been out for at least two hours; it definitely needs to mellow out a bit. Additional note (from the second bottle in one week): two hours decanting is not enough. The ZING! factor holds on tenaciously, and even after two hours, I was swirling for 5-10 minutes a glass to get more air on it. The effect of decanting on this wine is dramatic. If you get a hard acidic edge bordering on "spritziness," leave it for a couple more hours, preferably in a decanter. I've seen other reviews say it was better on the second day and that sounds about right.

(about 1 year ago)Fruit bomb with lots of sour cherry. Fruit began to feel too artificial for me after a while.

(11 months ago)Had a cold. Couldn't smell a thing. Tasted pepper and alcohol. Probably didn't miss much.

(11 months ago)This marvelous blend of three varietals produces a red wine that is memorable and goes well with beef, especially a rare steak. The taste is boldy and fruity. I first tried this gem of a wine at Salt Lick Steakhouse in Banff, Alberta. I was so glad that I ordered that wine to accompany my dinner that evening as it introduced me to a wine that I deemed worthy of adding to my cellar

(13 days ago)Big fruit, but balanced well with the tannins and acid. I let this one decant overnight (12-14 hours). I was very pleased with the earthy nose. It had a long finish with an alcohol after-affect on the palate. Normally, I do not like that, but it seemed somehow fitting. Noticable berry, cherry, and pepper flavors. Fantastic value for about $10. Not nearly as "big" as I anticipated, or as dry I expected from an Australian red.
