Barefoot Chardonnay California
(about 1 year ago)This was a very delicious, inexpensive wine and goes great with our Tuscan chicken pasta dinner.
Barefoot Chardonnay California
(about 1 year ago)Very flavorful with apples and peaches. Good summer wine. Very good for the price.

(about 1 year ago)Not your typical Buttery Oaky California Chard... This wine has a fruity flavor with a hint of citrus and apple. I was pleasantly surprised with this wine given the apparent price point (I got my bottle as a gift).

Have to admit it, I'm not a big Chard fan: I tend to go for the big fruity aromas and kickin' acidity - SB, Viognier, Gewurtz. So I asked a guy at the local wine store what he'd recommend for a $10 Chard - he walked in circles confused for a minute, trying to remember what someone had told him once about good Chard choices, and actually walked into the back room to get some advice before returning and handing us a bottle of '05 Estancia for $11 schmackers. To get a better handle on it, we decided to match it against some cheapo swill-inna-bottle from the discount rack, and grabbed a non-vintage Barefoot Chardonnay from the region "California" for 7 big ones (the back label says copyright 2003, although I'm sure they use grapes from different years).
The Barefoot came with a big star sticker - just like you'd get in elementary school for good behavior - listing the bottle as "Best Buy Recommended, Beverage Testing Institute, Chicago, IL 2003." Well, I dunno about you, but I sure as hell turn to Chicago for my wine wisdom!
Shockingly, the Beverage Testing Institute had a better handle on things in 2003 than my clueless wine guide in 2007: the Barefoot won hands down.
Both of these wines were characterized by toned down oak, which was nice - both very crisp and clean, with good acidity. The Estancia had oak in the house, but just the hardwood floors and trim, not the whole log cabin. Barefoot was a home made purely of fruit - almost no oakiness detectable.
The clincher was that the Estancia just didn't have any there there - it had a decent balance between fruits and acidity, the oak wasn't over the top.... But every component was so subtle, you could almost miss the whole wine if you weren't paying attention. The nose is really tight, the fruits have been subdued into abject submission, and the oak is left to rollick around on the finish in a moderate way, but with not much competition.
The Barefoot on the other hand had great fruit - floral on the nose, almost like a Sauvignon Blanc dress on the body of a Chard - great taste on the palate, it falls apart a bit on the finish, but this definitely qualifies as a good quaffing wine.
I found surprisingly that the Estancia actually did better when it was warmer. Consider not fully chilling. Pegged in the Estancia - which makes some fantastic other products - at an 86, and the Barefoot at a low 88 (possible an 87 if it wasn't seated next to a flop).

(about 1 year ago)I'm a fan of the Barefoot line of nonvintage wines, and this one is no exception. Very fruity, predominantly apple with a bit of a citrus twang. Pleasantly oaked without being overdone. Slightly flabby but still very refreshing. An excellent choice for a hot summer day.
Barefoot Chardonnay California
(about 1 year ago)A little oak on the nose, with pears, and apricots coming through, though all very tight. Not great, but good. Very crisp, and very little oak. High acidity, made me pucker a few times.
Barefoot Chardonnay California
(about 1 year ago)A decent wine at a very attractive price.
Barefoot Chardonnay California
(7 months ago)A refreshing wine well worth the price. Little complexity.

(5 months ago)I bought this wine because I needed white wine for a recipe. It is obviously inexpensive, so I didn't expect much. I was surprised to find a delightful aroma, crisp and fruity. The taste, however, is what one might expect from a $5 bottle of wine. It had a soapy, artificial taste with an overly oaky finish. Slightly bitter aftertaste, I thought. I did not discern any other specific flavors. This is a beach or BBQ wine, but I would not buy it for everyday sipping.
