Thanks for checkin' out the old Cellar... I'm starting to develop some likes and dislikes. I need to get a new rack... I'm doubled up on some of it, but I'm afraid that i'll feel the need to quickly fill any added capacity ;^) Hopefully you're drinking something tasty at the moment!

GV, I guess I am the only one spreading the WLTV love in Napa. I haven't found any other Vayniacs here...

FYI, I just e-mailed Gary Vaynerchuk through the Cork'd interface. So, he may answer you right here. Bottles up! Here's what I asked: Please Check out NapaJustin's Corkboard There's a question that has been asked that could make for a good WLTV episode, methinks...I don't ever remember you talking about Brett's effect on wine on WLTV. Also, about ?s. Do you want us to continue to put all of our potential QOTDs onto WLTV into the area that you've designated for questions? Or are you also planning to add a link on Cork'd so that members can ask each other ?s which the whole Cork'd community (or at least one's drinking buddies) can read /answer,so that we all have access to all of the answers/advice/info.?

NapaJustin, thank you so much for the very intelligent answer, for sharing your experiences with this, and for linking other (Corkies? Cork'd members? What should we call ourselves?!) to other sources of info. It is so good for all of us to be able to have someone so knowledgeable on Cork'd! I agree with you that an episode on what Brett is, and how it affects wine flavor would be GREAT. Since Gary wants to get his QOTDs from WLTV, though, maybe we shouldn't shoot him an e-mail request from Cork'd, but rather we should paste it from here to WLTV....Lemme know what you think...and if you've already done this for the "Brett" question.

Hi Trish, Brett or brettanomyces is a unicellular fungus that can spoil wine. It can live in oak barrels or other cellulose based items in a winery(or anywhere else i suppose). It can be hard to get rid unless you get rid of everything and start fresh, which can be costly. Basically it can make the wine smell farmyardy, horsey and sort of rustic. It is common in wines from Chateau de Beaucastel in the Chateauneuf du Pape region. Some wineries are plagued by brett and can't get rid of it and others don't feel there is anything wrong with it. Some people really enjoy the flavor profiles that brett adds to wines and others down right hate it. Anyway for more information just google Brettanomyces. Maybe GV will do a show on wines that suffer from Brett (ie, Chateau de Beaucastal, Sequoia Grove Reserve Cab, Heller Cab Franc and others...)

What, or who, in the world, is Brett? Justin, I was just reading your abysmal review of the case of Cab Franc in your cellar that you don't like. I feel for you--I've never bought a case of anything at one time, and if I bought a whole case of $$$$ wine and it turned out to suck, I'd be sick!!!! Anyway, what is Brett and what does Brett taste like? Is there a typical varietal that it tends to show up in? I've never heard Gary talk about it. I assume that Brett isn't the stuff that causes wine to be corked....otherwise, you could take it back to the wine store. Anyway, you seem like a very interesting and knowledgeable person, so I hope that you don't mind that I've added you as a drinking buddy. Have a great evening! -Trish da' Dish
